Immediately, I think of an analogy I heard years ago concerning the roof on one’s house. While we know our roof is important, we rarely pay attention to its structural integrity. Importance, then, doesn’t always equate to significance or priority. Just like a roof escapes our thoughts until it’s leaking, so, too may Spiritual practice until we are in the emotional or mental trenches. Or, maybe it’s physical ailments that bring on a desperation for a new way of living. Despair and distress were certainly my way into a life of spiritual practice, ritual, presence and stillness. In a society where “busy” is an acceptable full sentence to how we’ve “been,” burnout leads more and more of us down the exit ramp to a more sane pace, a sane space. My roof is important. But, I haven’t maintained it, today. Or, yesterday. And, probably not tomorrow, either. My spirituality is indispensable and receives dedicated time and undivided attention, daily. I appreciate this reminder when asked questions that remind me of then and now…of importance vs significance.
